Christmas lights & holiday events in Alaska

With deep snow and only a few hours of daylight in December, Alaska may be the most naturally Christmasy state, where holiday lights glow against long winter nights.

Zoo Lights at the Alaska Zoo

Zoo light show Anchorage, AK

The Alaska Zoo turns its wooded trails into an annual community light festival, with animated displays, overhead light canopies and glowing animal figures. Because the trails stay snowy all season, it is one of the few zoo light shows in the country nearly guaranteed a white backdrop.

Visiting: Runs on select evenings from late November through the winter; dress for real cold and check the zoo's site for the schedule.Official site →

Santa Claus House

Christmas shop North Pole, AK

Con and Nellie Miller opened this trading post south of Fairbanks in 1952, and it grew into a year-round Christmas store in the town of North Pole. Visitors come for the giant Santa statue, the reindeer and the chance to send letters stamped from the North Pole.

Visiting: Open year-round with extended holiday-season activities; check hours before making the drive from Fairbanks.

Seasons, hours, tickets and prices change every year — always check the official site before you go.
